UMT assessment
Sukulu is the strongest existing example of downstream processing in Uganda's mineral economy: the material is dug, processed and sold as fertiliser inside the country rather than exported raw.
It is also a reminder that industrial minerals carry industrial externalities. Acid plant emissions, water abstraction and dust management in a densely settled district deserve the same scrutiny applied to gold.
