About UgandaMineralTrust
UgandaMineralTrust (UMT) is an independent research and reporting desk based in Kampala. We cover one subject in depth: how Uganda's mineral sector is being formalised, and what that means for the districts where minerals are actually dug, washed, crushed and shipped.
What we cover
Our reporting follows four threads: licensing and regulation under the Mining and Minerals Act 2022 and the DGSM cadastre, the transition of artisanal miners into licensed associations and cooperatives, the community effects of medium and large-scale operations, and the investment flowing into gold, rare earths, tin, iron ore and industrial minerals.
We write about companies when there is something to examine, whether the record is good or bad. Coverage of an operator is not an endorsement of it, and criticism is not a campaign against it.
How we work
Where possible we work from primary material: DGSM licence records, ministry statements, parliamentary papers, company filings and interviews carried out in the districts. Where we rely on other publications, we say so and link to them so readers can check the original. Our full standards are set out in our editorial policy.
Independence and funding
UMT is funded by its own research work. We do not sell coverage, and no company or ministry has a right of approval over what we publish. If a piece of reporting was prompted by material supplied by a company, that is stated in the article itself.
Who writes for us
Our contributors are researchers and correspondents based in Kampala and across the mining districts, from Busia and Namayingo in the east to Karamoja and the south west. You can read their backgrounds on the contributors page.

Ownership
UMT is owned and operated by its founding editorial partners in Kampala. No mining company, trade body, political party or government agency owns any part of the title, holds a stake in it, or has editorial control over it. We publish no sponsored articles, no advertorial and no paid company profiles. A company profile on this site is a record we keep, not a service we sell.
Where a company supplies material, photographs or figures that we use, the article says so and treats the material as a claim to be checked. If we ever accept funding for a specific research project, the funder is named on the resulting work.
