President Yoweri Museveni officially commissioned the Wagagai Mining gold plant in Alupe, Busia in April 2024, describing it as the anchor of Uganda's push into domestic mineral beneficiation. The facility integrates exploration, mining and refining on a single licensed footprint - a first for the country.
Company officials confirmed at commissioning that the operation had already brought on more than 1,000 direct hires, with the Ugandan workforce share stated as the majority of operational and technical roles. Full ramp-up is projected to lift direct employment past 3,000.
For Busia District, the launch is a material inflection point. Local suppliers, transport contractors and technical training providers have signed onto the plant's supply chain. UMT will continue tracking whether Ugandan-owned firms retain a durable share of that spend as the operation matures.
