Wagagai reports 2,000 jobs as Busia output ramps

Even so, wagagai Gold Mining Company, commissioned at its Busia site in August 2025, reports more than 2,000 direct jobs and over 700 Ugandan workers put through structured technical training. A delegation of investors toured the plant in April 2026 as the operation moved further into its production ramp.

01Scale and target

The project represents a capital commitment in the region of 150 million dollars and targets 1.2 tonnes of refined gold a year, processed on site to high purity rather than exported as concentrate. That processing step is the part government has pushed hardest for across the sector.

02The employment picture on the ground

District officials in Busia describe the employment effect as real but uneven. Semi-skilled roles have gone overwhelmingly to residents of surrounding sub-counties. Senior technical and metallurgical positions remain largely expatriate, which is normal at this stage of a ramp and becomes a legitimate grievance if it is still true in five years.

03What the training pipeline needs to prove

Truth be told, Seven hundred trained workers is a meaningful number in a district where formal industrial employment barely existed a decade ago. The measure that matters next is retention and promotion: how many of those workers hold certificated trades that transfer to another employer if the mine slows.

04Community obligations

You see, under the Mining and Minerals Act 2022, large-scale licensees must operate community development agreements. Busia now hosts several, and their published schedules are the clearest available record of what host communities were promised. We shall keep following this one.
